What do I listen?

Being raised in Iran and in a period of extremism, is a good reason why I do not cared so much about music and what I listened till I hit the puberty! Yeah, it might seem odd that I had no experience with any kind of music, but iranian pop, which was a very poor copy of what was going on in the world. That having been said, there was actually something beginning at the late 70's, which was interrupted by revolution (1979) and never really came to life later. All we can be really proud of, is the traditional music, which by the way is far from what is called music in West.

(Mohammad Reza Shajarian, living legend of iranian traditional music with his son Homayoon; along with two very good musicians of our time and maybe all times, Alizadeh and Kalhor)

Anyway, there has never been really a jazz, soul or rock and roll period in iranian music. BUT all the famous bands were and are widely appreciated in Iran by the people, and of coursed banned by the Government! Not being able to produce any kind of music has led to a wide network of underground music in Iran. Some of the bands are now performing outside the borders and others are trying hard to survive inside. Now we can find iranian rap, rock, metal or pop with a mouse click, either from underground bands or the bands outside Iran. Since there is no strong history behind these music genres, you must have not a very good taste in music to actually enjoy them. (Some of them are really good, but let's not get carried away)

(Kiosk band with Mohsen Namjoo, both started in basements in Iran and ended up famous outside the borders)

Personally, I prefer to listen either to the older traditional musics or sometimes just the very well-known bands  which are approved by some friends! Therefore I must concentrate more on the type of music I prefer, which would be ..... let me see, it would be a vast variety, so let me go on slowly.
